Shane Dempsey – Adult/Athlete High Performance Training
Having been an athlete all my life, I was always drawn to the weight room and strength and conditioning environments. Fast forward through my early 20s, 3 separate low back injuries requiring pain killers and muscle relaxers to remediate, non-progress in the weight room and I was looking for answers. Enter me hiring my first coach and embarking on my fitness journey. after 3+ years of coaching and testing things on myself; I move differently, look differently and overall FEEL differently. The only way I was able to do this was conscript mentors who pushed me to new heights. Even though you probably don’t want to be a fitness industry worker, my goal for each of my clients is to bring the energy, passion and enthusiasm of the coach that I wish I had when I was younger, and was fortunate enough to have later in life.
So, what exactly is human/athlete high performance training? It is a comprehensive, physiology driven training plan designed to teach you HOW to move through the main movement patterns to start. This doesn’t mean we won’t push intensity and you won’t feel a stimulus in early sections, but exercise selection will be driven through the lens of “How do I get X to master the squat/hinge/lunge/push/pull?”. Everything builds off of this, whether you are a baseball player looking to improve exit velo, a former collegiate athlete looking to get back into (or exceed) the fitness capacity you had in college or a Mom of 3 looking for efficient workouts in a busy schedule, my aim is to meet you where you are at, set concrete goals based on what you want to achieve and then I figure out the roadmap from there. I incorporate general strength training, plyometrics, mobility drills, energy systems (cardio) development, and safe power development (this stays important regardless of age) to name a few. I analyze the situation at hand, and look through my toolbox to find the right tool for the job.
A little bit more about me – I started my Strength and Conditioning career at Dartmouth College interning in the varsity weight room while acting as Director of High Performance and interim Head Coach for the Men’s rugby team. From there I moved down to Boston to work at Flight Performance and Fitness, where I had the incredible pleasure to learn from 2 of the best mentors on the east coast while working with clients/athletes ranging from 11 YOs playing hockey, D1 Baseball players, USA Rugby and Hockey national team players, 50 year old dads and 78 year olds just trying to move well. In that time I acquired my NSCA – CSCS and CPT while amassing over 10,000 hours of coaching and floor time. This experience has proved invaluable in giving me a unique lens to look at human movement, address issues and maximize strengths.
All of this to say, the principles I operate on stay the same:
1. Meet the client where they are at and look to establish foundational movement skills or build upon an already solid foundation. This approach creates strength and resiliency through all of the movement patterns in a sound, pain free way.
2. They don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.
–> My aim is not to bore you with scientific knowledge or wow you with information about glycolytic energy pathways (if you want to go down the rabbit hole I am MORE than happy to oblige), but in reality it is to help you see the fitness industry and the way you move differently. High touch point relationships will be built, in these I will look to understand what makes you tick, what your schedule and stressors are like and how I can be of best service to you in creating the most robust and resilient human possible.
3. Not just talking the talk, but walking the walk – Just about ANYTHING I program to a client (there are very few exceptions to this) I have tested or done myself. This allows me to relate to the feelings and sensations that movements and different types of energy system programming can have on the individual.
4. Big rocks first, then we can major in the minors – I aim to help you NAIL the big rocks of fitness, nutrition, and some holistic health tools. After we have mastered the basics of consistency, adherence, protein consumption and some breathwork tools then we will take a deeper dive into more nuanced conversations. In my experience I have found the majority of people can clean up their gym, nutrition and overall well being by just nailing the fundamentals of high performance.
I am also a certified Nutrition Coach through Dr. Layne Norton’s “BioLayne” nutrition course. He is evidenced based and research focused – Nutrition coaching with me is about mastering the big rocks of protein intake, nutrient balance, sleep and hydration.
If you are looking not just for a training experience but for skills, tools and knowledge to guide your decision making in the realms of fitness + nutrition, shoot me a message and let’s see if we’re a good fit together.
